Fragrances and how they can help your mental health
Did you know that the month of may is mental health awareness month and at Willow and Thyme, we understand how fragrances can affect your mood, health, and wellbeing. Certain fragrances can stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and endorphins which contribute to the feeling of happiness. One keyway that fragrances affect your mental wellbeing is by evoking memories. The area of your brain that processes smell is close to where your memories are stored. Different smells can relate to positive emotions and have a calming effect.
Smelling certain fragrances can also reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure and slow down breathing. These physiological effects are particularly helpful in reducing stress and anxiety. The calming effect is due to the aroma having a solid connection to nature which helps you associate them with the great outdoors. This sooths the mind and makes you feel less anxious in return.
